He was painting 19th century romantic works when the Impressionists revolutionized painting technique but he never changed. I see the same problem with Eakins whose works are very similar to Tanner in style. Once your eyes have been conditioned to the bright colors, energetic brush work and impressionistic images in art, it's difficult to appreciate the darker tones and religious/sentimental themes in Tanner. Plus, a lot of his work is not in the US.
